1 West is a key academic building located in the middle of the central parade that runs through our campus.
This major refurbishment aims to retain the building's original character while providing increased high quality learning and research space and improved environmental performance.
The £22m project consists of three phases which will see the addition of new learning facilities, computer laboratories, research facilities and offices.
- Phase 1
- A three-storey extension to provide learning space and office accommodation. Completed in September 2013.
- Phase 2
- The refurbishment of the core of the existing building. Scheduled for completion in September 2014.
- Phase 3
- The refurbishment of the building’s façade and areas immediately behind it. Scheduled for completion in September 2015.
Work is underway on the third and final phase of the expansion and refurbishment of 1 West. Works are moving from the ground floor up, with a scaffold supporting a temporary roof which allows the existing one to be replaced.
Construction of the new roof has begun, along with fitting out three floors of office space, teaching and research laboratories for our Department of Computer Sciences.
Demolition work and controlled asbestos removal work is ongoing. Completion is scheduled for February 2014.
Phase 1 of the project is now complete.
A topping out ceremony was held to mark the completion of the main construction work for the first phase of refurbishments.
