Dr Tess Ridge gives evidence to committee scrutinising Child Poverty Bill
Dr Tess Ridge of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Policy (CASP), Department of
Social and Policy Sciences, has given oral evidence to the House of Commons Public Bill Committee
who are scrutinising the The Child Poverty Bill.
The Bill, which had its first reading in July, will provide a statutory basis to the
commitment made by the Labour Government in 1999 to eradicate child poverty by 2020.
Its intended purpose is to give new impetus to the Government’s commitment to eradicate child
poverty and create a framework to monitor progress at a national and local level.
It will also place a statutory duty on future governments of whatever hue to address child
poverty, thereby ensuring an ongoing commitment to ending child poverty.
