Explanation of themes and blocks - Final year options for students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering

You will be aware that the Department has decided on a different approach to the choice of optional units in the final year (and also the third year of MEng/BEng Mechanical Engineering).

All units have been placed in "Blocks". The members of each block will be timetabled at similar times.

Additionally, units have been grouped into "themes" and the majority of students will be asked to choose 1 theme (consisting of three units). Having chosen a theme, you will have to choose your remaining units from blocks where your theme choice units do not appear. Students on language programmes (except Mechanical Engineering with French/ German) do not choose a theme because of the extra mandatory units they have, and only have to choose optional units from the blocks.

It is your responsibility to check that you have taken the necessary pre-requisites in order to study a unit, and also that you do not choose units you have already studied. Your student unit enrolment form is tailored for each individual programme - if you receive a form which has incorrect programme details please speak to your departmental office so that the correct form can be issued to you.

Example

Here is an example based on the final year of MEng Innovation and Engineering Design.

Looking at the following extract from the University's Catalogue, you can see that for this programme you would have to choose one of two themes (three units). To make up the correct number of credits you would then have to choose a further 3 units - a maximum of 1 unit per block. If you choose the first theme you cannot then choose any further units from the blocks which contain MANG0072, MECH0049, or MECH0140, i.e. blocks numbered 3, 5, and 9. So you must choose your further three units from blocks numbered, 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8.

In this example, blocks 5 and 9 are not actually displayed because both themes include units from those blocks.
