Aims: To provide students with a basic knowledge of the civil engineering profession and its place in society and to prepare the students for successfully obtaining and completing their first placement experience.
Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit students should be able to: * demonstrate an understanding of the importance of the engineer's role in society and some of the broader issues affecting an engineer's work; * demonstrate an understanding of the role of professional organisations and the ethical behavioural framework within which the engineer is expected to operate; * demonstrate a knowledge of the routes to corporate membership of ICE and IStructE and the contribution to be made by the industrial placements; * demonstrate an ability to find a job; * demonstrate an understanding of what is needed for good written and verbal communication skills and an awareness of the requirements for the effective use of graphical communication; * demonstrate an ability to assume responsibility for their personal safety on a construction site. Skills: Intellectual skills * To understand taught material - taught Professional/Practical skills * To prepare students for their first placement experience - taught and facilitated * To prepare students to be responsible for their personal safety on a construction site - taught and facilitated Transferable/key skills * To communicate ideas verbally and in writing - facilitated and assessed. Content: Organisation of the industry - sectors, clients, designer and contractors, the role of the engineer, professional institutions. The basic principles of design and construction procurement - promoter's obligations, feasibility studies, options for procurement. Preparation for placement - SATOR, employer's role, sandwich training, personal safety on construction sites, looking for a job. Communication skills - written, verbal and graphic communication, applications [CVs and covering letters]. |
