Aims: To give students a knowledge of legal and contract obligations in the construction industry.
Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit students should be able to: * Demonstrate an understanding of the English legal system and its context; * Demonstrate a broad knowledge of contract, company and employment law as applied to civil engineering organisation and consultants; * Appreciate the role of arbitration as a form of dispute resolution. Skills: Intellectual skills * To understand taught material - taught Professional/Practical skills * To give students an appropriate level of legal knowledge in preparation for employment as a graduate in the construction industry - taught and facilitated Transferable/key skills * To communicate ideas in writing - facilitated and assessed. Content:Introduction to English law and legal systems - trot, negligence and contract. Introduction to contract law - creating and using contracts. Company law - types of business organisation, setting up a limited company, directors and responsibilities, insolvency and bankruptcy. Employment law - contract of employment, rights and duties, terms and conditions of employment. Construction law - standard forms of contract, NEC, JCT, examples of application. Construction law - process of arbitration, actions and duties of parties. |
