Aims: The aims of this Unit are twofold: firstly, to introduce students to the general ideas and ideals which have shaped cities; and secondly to familiarise the students with the ideas of major urban theorist of the last century (up to today).
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this Unit, each student will have demonstrated an awareness of the critical architectural theorists of the twentieth century, and their influence on city-form, specialising in one theorist. They will also have demonstrated an awareness of the influences on the contemporary built environment of individual buildings, the design of cities and past and present societies. Students will also be required to demonstrate a knowledge of the influences on these urban theorists of past ideas and eras.
Skills:
Ability to analyse the ideas of an urban theorist, and the visual communication skills required to present such an analysis.
Content:
The Unit begins with an introductory lecture, and proceeds through student-led seminars on one particular theorist. The Unit will also introduce the students to the policies that govern urban design and will introduce a methodology used to assess the architectural qualities and character of an historic UK city such as Bath. The second part of the Unit is carried out in studio AR30019 with students required to produce an illustration of the urban analysis of their site informed by the unit.
