Aims: This unit aims through the production of an Urban Design Project Report to explain the context of the European city under investigation in AR40107 and AR40108, and to describe group and individual architectural and urban design responses to it. The unit aims to demonstrate the role of concise report writing in the presentation of architectural and urban ideas. In addition the unit aims ot introduce concepts of building construction and environmental design in support of individual student designs produced concurrently in Design Studio 6.2 (AR40108).
Learning Outcomes:
Students who have completed this unit should be able to demonstrate their ability to summarise complex ideas concisely in writing and through appropriately selected diagrams and images. In addition, students will be able to understand principles behind complex construction of large-scale buildings, including façade engineering. It will focus on issues of climate, structure and sustainability.

The writing of concise reports; individual research. An ability to integrate construction with design concepts, aesthetics and general building planning; and to consider construction detailing with respect to aspects of climate, structure, materials and aesthetics.
Content:
This unit will be taught in the studio alongside, and to assist, individual student projects; a number of seminars within the studio on particular, project related matters of construction will take place. A Technical Report forms an integral part of the overall Design Project Report, and should aim to set out the constructional, structural and environmental aspects of the design. The Technical Report should be organised around the use of materials and their application in the building of construction technology, structural concepts and the environmental strategy in the design. The text should demonstrate the technical development of the project, from the architectural concepts to the construction details, with a few drawn examples of details that show an integration of the three strands of construction, structure and environment.
