Requisites:
Aims: To gain experience and knowledge of civil engineering design in practice, and to report on and assess the experience gained, with some emphasis on a particular area of interest.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the unit, the student should be able to demonstrate an enhanced understanding of civil engineering practice, and an ability to write a clear report. The student will also be able to demonstrate:
* a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights, much of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of this area of professional practice;
* originality in the application of knowledge;
* an ability to deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences;
* self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and ability to act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level;
* an ability to continue to advance their knowledge and understanding, and to develop new skills to a high level;
* the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring: the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility; decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations; and the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development.
Content:
Practical experience and first hand observation of civil engineering design, either in the university in exercise, or real projects in industry, for students for whom suitable arrangements can be made. Practising engineers play a major role in the design and tutoring of this work, whether in industry or at the university. Those working in industry must return to the university at least one day each fortnight for academic supervision.
