CH40072 Main group ring systems

Credits: 3
Level: Masters
Semester: 2
Assessment: EX100
Requisites:
Before taking this unit you must take CH20095 and in taking this unit you cannot take CH30072

Aims & Learning Objectives:
To consider the synthesis, structure, bonding and uses of main group ring compounds with particular emphasis on the transition from ionic to covalent systems. After studying the Unit, students should be able to:
* Explain the solid state and solution structures of a range of main group ring compounds (including those containing Li, Mg, Al, B, Si, and P).
* Describe how these compounds are synthesised and how their structure and bonding varies.
* Describe some uses of these compounds.
* Interpret analytical data (e.g. NMR) in order to elucidate structures.
* Extend the principles encountered in the course to critical discussion of recent and potential advances in the synthesis and characterisation of metallo-organic compounds.
Content:
The structure, bonding and synthesis of organolithium ring systems. A detailed examination of lithium amide and imide structures leading to a general theory of ring stacking and laddering. Comparison of Li, Mg and Al ring systems. A survey of the synthesis, structure and bonding of B-N, Si-N, and P-N ring systems.
