ME20026 Modern manufacturing - integrated design, make and serve

Before taking this unit you must take ME10012
Aims: To introduce the students to the holistic view of modern industry from design, to making the products and providing logistical and support services throughout their lifecycle.
To provide an introduction to process and assembly planning.
To introduce students to modern verification methods including metrology for dimensional and form product verification and discrete event simulation for manufacturing system performance verification.
To gain an understanding of how manufacturing systems and supply chains are designed, operated and controlled.
Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Understand the close relationship between design, production and service in modern industry.
* Understand process capability and how production and assembly processes are planned.
* Understand the basic elements of dimensional metrology for process verification.
* Understand how manufacturing systems are designed.
* Design a manufacturing system for the assembly of products.
* Understand how the flow of work through a production system is controlled.
* Understand how quality is controlled in a production system.
* Understand the requirement and role of other functions needed to manage manufacture.
Skills:
Problem solving; working independently.
Content:
Part 1. Modern Manufacturing Methods based on Process Capability and Verification
Integrated Design, Production and Service: the proposed new paradigm of modern manufacturing. Process Capability: process capability of discrete processes and assembly, introduction to process and assembly planning. New Verification Methods Using Novel Metrology: introduction to metrology and dimensional measurement, non-contact large volume metrology. Case Study: verification of a large structure using indoor-GPS and invited industrial lectures.
Tutorials to centre around the Case Study, students to ideally do a Lab session or small group demonstration using the indoor-GPS system.
Part 2. Introduction to Contemporary Manufacturing Systems Introduction to Manufacturing Systems and Production Planning and Control. Push (MRP) and Pull (JIT) methods of Production Control and Introduction to Capacity Planning. Quality Control and Implementation of Production Planning and Control in Industry. Case Study.
Tutorials to deal with "Assembly Line Design for an Engine".
