Objectives:
Aims:To review fundamental principles underlying digital media technologies for Information Processing Networks
Objectives: By the end of this unit a student should be able to: (a) Understand the representation of digital signals and apply digital filtering techniques for digital data in the time and frequency domains. (b) Understand the theory and application of discrete orthogonal transformations. (c) Understand the modulation and transmission of digital data by analogue carriers. (d) Understand the concepts of redundancy in a digital signal and apply lossless coding to reduce entropy in a digitally coded symbol stream. (e) Understand the use of error correction in a digital communications system.

Content:
Signal Processing: Analogue signals and the Fourier transform, linear filtering in the time and frequency domain, sampled signals and aliasing, the discrete Fourier transform, digital filtering in the time and frequency domain, orthogonal transforms in the time and frequency domain, Parseval's theorem and the significance of digital data. Information theory: Modulation for digital transmission, information content and redundancy in digital signals, entropy, lossless coding of digital signals by Huffman and artihmetic coding, noise and error correction in digital transmission.
