Description: or equivalent units from another institution. MA30047 and MA30063 will be available as pre-sessional distance learning material for MSc students. Aims:
To study current problems in ecology, evolution and epidemiology using mathematical modelling techniques.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit, students should be able to:
* Build a mathematical model suitable to address a particular research question in ecology, evolution or epidemiology;
* Use a range of mathematical techniques to analyse the mathematical model;
* Interpret and present findings from the modelling in a manner appropriate to the audience;
* Read and summarise research papers in mathematical biology;
* Prepare and present a seminar.

Skills:
Modelling biological systems (model formulation, analysis, interpretation, refinement) (T, F, A); Critical analysis of research papers (T, A); Presentation skills (T, F, A).

Content:

* Biological concepts: case studies in ecology, evolution and epidemiology used to highlight current research interests. These may include: co-operative behaviour; evolution of metabolic pathways; contact networks; disease resistance and co-infection; infection control.
* Model structures will include: dynamical systems; control systems; reaction-diffusion equations; network models and cellular automata/simulation.
* Mathematical techniques will include: perturbation theory; numerical solution using and adapting MATLAB programs instruction on which is given in MA50174; bifurcation theory; bounds and stability.
* Research techniques: reading and summarising research papers; preparing and giving a seminar; producing a poster.
