Description: Aims:
By the end of this unit, students will have a basic understanding of some areas of law.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the unit, students should be able to identify the structure and workings of the English legal system and be able to apply the knowledge of law that they have gained to their own personal experience. They should have an understanding of contract law and of tort law.

Content:
An introduction to the English legal system. The structure of the courts and the doctrine of precedent. Professional and lay involvement in the system. Primary and delegated legislation. The power of the police to stop and search; police procedure on arrest; the rights of the detained person; detention, European law.
An introduction to contract law. Essential terms of a contract, capacity, terms and structure of a contract. Implied terms, consumer law. Exclusion clauses, damages
An introduction to tort law. Negligence. Duty of care, breach of duty and damages. Remedies.
Regular weekly seminars will allow the student to bring up any questions raised in lectures.
