The aims of the unit are:
* to engage students in the critical examination of key contemporary social theory concepts;
* to prepare students to conduct theoretically informed research in the social sciences, with a particular focus on education and/or sports & coaching;
* to link students' personal research interests with a theoretical analysis of education and/ or sports & coaching.
Having studied this unit, students will be able to:
* Understand the meaning of contemporary social theory as an analytical tool for qualitative social science research;
* Begin to formulate their own theoretical approach to studying education and/ or sport & coaching to enhance their professional practice.
* To assess research quality
* To critically analyse and evaluate a variety of types of information to advocate appropriate change in practice
* To enhance and reflect on their professional practice
* To better contribute to professional debate in their field
* To communicate their ideas clearly
* To utilise problem solving-skills in a variety of theoretical situations
* To continue to advance their knowledge and understanding
* Manage time, prioritise workloads and recognise and manage personal emotions and stress
* Make critical use of the literature in the social science oriented analysis of education/ sports & coaching (T/F/A).
* Make critical use of professional experience in the field of Education (T/F/A).
* Analyse, interpret and critique findings and arguments (T/F/A).
* Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems (T/F).
* Evaluate research and variety of types of information and evidence critically, also making informed judgements in the absence of complete data (T/F/A)
* Contribute to professional and academic debate in the field of education, sport & coaching (F).
* Act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional level (F).
* Communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences (T/F).

In this unit, students will critically analyse contemporary education, sports and coaching research that is informed by theoretical foundations in social theory. The unit will cover the following areas:
* Contemporary ways of thinking about and theorising key social theory concepts;
* The socio-cultural contexts of education, sport, coaching and physical activity.
