Aims & Learning Objectives:
To provide students with a basic introduction to the mathematical skills in calculus, functions of several variables and differential equations necessary to tackle process engineering design applications. After successfully completing this unit students should be able to use concepts, ideas and results from calculus, functions of several variables and differential equations in the context of relevant applications.

Content:

* Calculus: Limits, differentiation, integration. Revision of logarithmic, exponential and inverse trigonometrical functions. Revision of integration including polar and parametric co-ordinates, with applications.
* Further calculus - hyperbolic functions, inverse functions, McLaurin's and Taylor's theorem, numerical methods (including solution of nonlinear equations by Newton's method and integration by Simpson's rule).
* Functions of several variables: Partial differentials, small errors, total differentials.
* Differential equations: Solution of first order equations using separation of variables and integrating factor, linear equations with constant coefficients using trial method for particular integration.
