Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To provide an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge of the history and theory of Western architecture, ornament, meaning, proportion, cultural context and methodology through an introduction to the work of researchers in the school. It will also provide an introduction academic writing - including the use of footnotes - and an understanding of the importance of methodology in the formulation of an argument whether in words or in design.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit students will:
* Demonstrate knowledge of the histories and theories of architecture and the history of ideas, and the related disciplines of art and cultural studies;
* Demonstrate ability to use written communication methods to clearly and effectively convey and critically appraise design ideas.

Skills:
Simple research from set books; digestion and marshalling of facts and argumentation; critical awareness, presentation of findings in the form of an illustrated essay.

Content:
11 lectures. Subjects to be covered will be drawn from areas of research expertise within the school. These will include specialised aspects of Egyptian Greek and Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Victorian and Modernist Architecture. Emphasis will be place on the issue of method in the writing of architectural history.
