Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit the learner will be able to:
* Demonstrate understanding of learning theories, including theories of motivation.
* Recognise and differentiate between psychological, sociological and philosophical perspectives on learning theory.
* Justify choices when selecting and organising activities, materials and resources that will enhance children's learning and development.
* Demonstrate understanding of the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the curriculum for children.
* Identifies the methods, techniques and processes relating to the assessment of children's learning.

Skills:
The professional practice for this unit is that the learner must demonstrate whilst working as a Senior Practitioner that they can:
* Evaluate and update their own knowledge and practice
* Establish and implement procedures to review and update current
* knowledge and practice
* Integrate outcomes from review into own practice
* Apply underpinning equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory values and principles to own work.

Content:
1. Significant and emerging theories and principles of:
a) how children learn, including theories of motivating children, sociological perspectives, psychological perspectives and philosophical dimensions
b) the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the curriculum for children, including:
* how to organise the content to maximise learning, motivation, development and participation
* how to make informed choices in the selection of, and how to organise, activities, materials and resources that will enhance children's learning and development and maximise their choice and involvement
* how to evaluate learning and play materials, resources and environments to maximise learning and development and involvement
* how and when to assess children's learning and development
c) how children develop, including theories related to play and its value in children's development
d) the role of the adult in Early Years and play
e) the regulatory and legislative framework for Early Years and play provision relating to the provision, the children, the parents and the rights of children, parents and individuals for protection and safety
f) Early Years and play value and belief systems, including those relating to anti-discriminatory practice and equality of opportunity
g) self evaluation and reflection including the effect of self on other people and the environment in which the learner works.
2. Methods, techniques and processes relating to:
a) the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the curriculum development for children
b) assessment and assessment systems
c) play
d) the promotion of children's development
e) balancing subjectivity and objectivity
f) record keeping and reporting procedures
g) differentiation according to the children's stage of development
h) the implementation of legislation and regulations about equal opportunities and anti-discrimination
i) the inclusion and exclusion of children
j) the evaluation of the effects of self on practice and the children
k) registration and inspection
l) maximising the involvement of children, parents and other members of the community
m) balancing power and coercion in relation to working and interacting with children, parents, other adults and professionals
n) the access and review of literature and its referencing within extended written projects, case studies, reports and self-reflective studies.
3. Information and facts about:
a) national and local requirements for children within own area of responsibility
b) the factors which impact on own ability to integrate new and emerging knowledge and practice into own practice and that of own work team
c) the implications of implementing new practices eliicited from current and emerging knowledge and practice into own practices and that of own work team
d) child welfare legislation, regulations, requirements and guidance
e) the legal status of the parent and the child
f) the potential effect of own attitudes, values and behaviour on work with children, parents, colleagues within the organisation and those with whom you need to work from outside the organisation
g) power relationships between: adult and child; adult and adult; worker and management; organisation and organisation
h) the legislation, regulations and guidance about equal opportunities and anti-discrimination
i) data protection and confidentiality and security of information.
