Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit the learner will be able to:
* Develop, implement and evaluate specific plans and activities to meet individual needs of children.
* Outline the significant and emerging theories related to the development of communication and language in children.
* Demonstrate knowledge of the national, local and organisation regulations and requirements regarding curriculum needs.
* Outline the structure and functions of those agencies with specific responsibility for curriculum needs
* Apply the principles of inclusive education, demonstrating awareness of the legislation and regulations about equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice.

Skills:
The professional practice for this unit is that the learner must demonstrate whilst working as a Senior Practitioner that they can:
* Assess present development levels and needs of children
* Develop and implement plans to meet individual and overall curricular needs
* Monitor, evaluate and adapt plans and activities to meet the individual needs of children.

Content:
1. Significant and emerging theories and principles of:
a) how children learn and develop, especially related to developing, implementing and evaluating specific plans and activities to meet the individual needs of children
b) the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of specific plans and activities to meet the individual needs of children
c) the development of communication and language in children
d) the importance and development of self-image and self-esteem in the early years of a child's development and the positive and negative effects of the expectations of others
e) parental and child welfare, rights and legislation
f) family and other values, beliefs and attitudes and how they may affect behaviour, self-reliance, self-image and identity
g) the underpinning legislation and the legal requirements, regulations and guidance relating to Early Years provision.
2. Methods, techniques and processes relating to:
a) behaviour modification and change
b) how maturity effects behaviour, self-reliance, self-image and identity
c) the use of role models to reinforce positive attributes
d) observational methods including time sampling, target child, naturalistic, etc. and the recording of them, for example, checklists, pre-coded categories, diagrams, etc.
e) objective assessment
f) own experiences, values, beliefs and attitudes and how they can affect own behaviour and objectivity
g) the system of values, beliefs and assumptions with reference to race, culture, ability and gender and how they affect the way people perceive and interpret the behaviour of others and how this could influence observations and assessments and explanations of child development.
3. Information and facts about:
a) own organisation's aims, objectives and policies relating to:
* the overall curriculum
* developing and implementing individual curricula for children
* the roles and responsibilities of staff involved in delivering the curriculum
b) the effects of own experience and practice on:
* the development of curriculum plans
* interactions with parents
* interactions with others who may be involved in the development of the plans
c) national, local and organisation regulations and requirements regarding curriculum needs for the children for whom the curriculum is being developed
d) the structure and functions of those agencies with specific responsibility for curriculum needs for the children for whom the plans are being developed
e) the effects previous experiences and backgrounds of the child might have on their development
f) the importance of working co-operatively with others to ensure that the content of the plan is acceptable, justifiable, relevant, applicable and implementable within the context of the Early Years setting..
