The aims of this unit are to:
* demonstrate the importance of a sound working knowledge of a range of theoretical and practical elements involved in materials testing and selection;
* demonstrate the value of data gathering, interpretation and processing of information relating to engineering materials;
* analyse the elements which affect a materials ability to perform in a given situation;
* develop confidence in selecting and justifying the choice of materials within given design briefs.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit students should be able to:
* select materials for a range of engineering applications;
* record the performance of materials in given situations;
* conduct a range of tests on materials;
* assess a materials suitability for a given function with regard to its strength, weight and corrosion or heat resistance;
* understand the requirements for setting the life of an engineering component;
* produce engineering specifications.

Skills:
During the unit students should gain the following skills:
Intellectual:
* gathering and processing technical information (A).
* formulating outcomes (A).
* making and defending decisions (A).
Professional:
* written and verbal presentations (A).
* representing the interests of an organisation (A).
* facilitation and negotiation (A).
Practical:
* practical testing of materials (T, A).
* use of simulation packages (T, A)
Key:
* writing reports (A)
* applying numerical techniques (T, A).

Content:
