Click here for further information Description: Aims:
The aims of this unit are to:
* develop a working knowledge of motorsport electrical systems, particularly vehicle loom design and construction, and an understanding of relevant technical constraints and regulations imposed by the sport's governing body on electronics systems design and assembly;
* develop an understanding of sensors, their specification, operation and applications, and their interaction with the data acquisition system fitted to the vehicle.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* contribute to technical discussions on data acquisition systems, technical and mechanical constraints in loom design and assembly, and on electronic, electrical and mechanical requirements of specified sensors, in a team responsible for the design, manufacture and fitment of a competition vehicle loom, incorporating a data acquisition system and associated sensors;
* assist in the specification and fitment of sensors, such as replacement of existing sensors, addition of new sensors in response to team requests for additional information required from the system.

Skills:
During the unit students should gain the following skills:
Intellectual:
* development of an analytical approach to the design of a competition vehicle loom (T,A)
Professional:
* contributing to the team datalogging requirements with assistance and opinions on looms and sensors (T,A).
Practical:
* assisting in the specification of a vehicle loom and on-board sensors to fulfil team data requirements and data requests from race engineers and chief mechanics (T).
Key:
* understanding of all vehicle and garage electrical requirements, with attendant ability to contribute to changing team needs, troubleshoot problems during events, repairs during time-limited high-pressure situations (T,A)

Content:
This unit concentrates on:
* motorsport vehicle electrical requirements, specifically on-boardlooms and garage electrical systems, such as computer network wiring, computer rack assembly and computer rack transportability
* on-vehicle sensors and sensor mounting in order to maximise the value and accuracy of data collected by such sensors.
