This Unit aims to provide consolidation of academic skills, and to develop these in order to complete the degree programme. It will help students to self-assess in key areas, and provide practical tuition and guidance in useful, relevant and portable skills. The unit aims to provide clear models of academic processes at an introductory level, and to improve students' understanding of their assignments.

Learning Outcomes:
Having completed this Unit the student will be able to:
* Use word-processing software to create essays and other assignments.
* Access information from the World Wide Web.
* Access electronic materials from the University library
* Organise and evaluate sources of information.
* Plan and structure written assignments.
* Understand reflective writing in an academic context.
* Understand and avoid plagiarism.
* Understand the purpose of references and use the Harvard system of referencing.

Skills:
* Using word-processing and internet browser software.
* Research using printed and electronic literature.
* Analysis and classification of information.
* Document writing and management.
* Using tutorial support to identify development needs.
* Identifying and accessing study resources.
* Analysing own performance and responding to feedback.

* Mining and organising material.

* Critical thinking and developing argument.
