This unit aims to introduce students to both the theory underpinning commonly used nutritional techniques and also develop the ability to apply the concept of dietary analysis.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit students will be able to:
* Identify and outline the function of the major macro and micro nutrients in the context of a coach advising his/her athletes;
* Identify and outline how macro nutrients are mobilised and utilised during different intensities of training and performance;
* Demonstrate an awareness of optimal nutrition for training and performance.

Content:
The role and sources of carbohydrates, fats and proteins;
The roles of vitamins and minerals in the body;
Role of the digestive system;
Macro and micro nutrient needs for athletes - the food guide pyramid, personal assessment, quality of the diet, RDA/RDI, vitamin supplements, mineral loss in sweat;
Macro nutrient utilisation during intense, moderate and prolonged training;
Special and important nutritional considerations for training and competition - Carbohydrate feeding before, during and following exercise; replenishing glycogen, the Glycaemia index, recommended oral hydration, evaluating sports drinks and diet plans.
