(to enable the students to)
* demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to support the care, development, learning and play of babies in partnership with their parents;
* know, understand and apply the theories and principles required to support the intellectual and language development of children under three;
* identify and apply theories and appropriate methods to support the development of a positive sense of self in children under three.

Learning Outcomes:

* demonstrate an understanding of the holistic nature of development and learning and the factors affecting this;
* identify and apply the ethical and legal responsibilities and rights of the institution, practitioner, parent and child;
* provide and maintain a healthy and stimulating environment meeting the developing physical, cognitive, social and emotional needs of the child;
* demonstrate the professional practice requirements of a Senior Practitioner.

Skills:
Observation, accuracy, sensitivity, confidentiality, application of data and information, caring, sector specific technical knowledge.

Content:
This unit will examine the care, development, learning and play of children under three. It will explore attachment and the role of the key person in relation to emerging theory and practice. Relationships with and responsibilities of families, practitioners and other adults will be explored in light of emerging neuro-scientific research. The students will examine the importance for the child to develop a positive sense of identity, and the right to a setting and adults who provide and maintain appropriate environments, resources and materials that are non-judgemental, non-assumptive and inclusive.
