The aims of this unit are to:
* develop an understanding of the use of CAD and CAM packages and how they interact;
* provide experience of a range of CAD/CAM packages;
* establish working parameters for CNC tooling.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* produce a component drawing and transfer it into a CAM package;
* simulate a range of cutter paths on a component profile using suitable CAM software;
* generate a solid model using different construction techniques;
* evaluate the use of different techniques when constructing a solid model;
* produce an engineering component.

Skills:
During the unit students should gain the following skills:
Intellectual:
* evaluate and specify appropriate CAD and Cam packages (A)
Professional:
* produce drawings and components to given design briefs (T,A)
* produce solutions to design problems with due regard to time and cost implications (T,A)
Practical:
* produce drawings (T,A)
* produce completed components (T,A)
* produce cutter path simulations (T,A)
* utilize digitised mapping equipment for producing components (T,A)
Key:
* a good working knowledge of a range of CAD/CAM packages (F)

Content:
This unit concentrates on:
* solid CAD modelling;
* digitized mapping;
* CNC programming "G" coding;
