The aim of the unit is to introduce students to research methods within educational research. The students will become familiar with the selection of suitable sources for the composition of a literature review. Students will become familiar with various research tools and how to use appropriate data analysis. Skills will be developed in gathering and interpreting data. Students will become familiar with research terminology and ethics.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit the student will be able to:
1. Review a range of research methods suitable within educational research, including Action Research.
2. Demonstrate the ability to understand the theory of methodology, including justifying the methods selected, ensuring suitable methods of data collection and analysis.
3. Identify suitable sources of information to inform the literature review.
4. Understand how a rationale informs the hypothesis.
5. Use and define research terminology such as triangulation, validity, reliability and sampling methods, identifying the ethical considerations in relation to data protection and participant confidentiality.

Skills:
Intellectual - (taught and assessed) Research terminology, justifying methodologies and interpreting secondary sources.
Professional - (facilitated taught and assessed) Selecting sample, using appropriate data gathering methods for the participants involved.
Practical - (facilitated and assessed) Gathering information. Planning research. Making changes to practice where appropriate.
Key Skills - (facilitated and assessed) This unit will support students in demonstrating a range of skills and competencies both professional and practical in the workplace, including making changes to practice.

Content:
This unit concentrates on the following area:
* The nature of research and the types of research;
* Research terminology;
* Varieties of quantitative and qualitative research;
* Sources of bias in research, how to recognise and reduce the effects;
* Methodologies: standardised instruments, triangulation, validity and reliability;
* Questionnaire construction, interview and observation methods;
* How to conduct a Literature review;
* Reviewing and synthesising the information obtained.
