The aim of the unit is to support students to construct and carry out a research project within their setting. The students will become familiar with the requirements of an Action research project and how it is used as a tool to support decision-making and problem solving in the workplace. This unit provides practitioners with a base for linking theory and practice.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit the student will be able to:
1. Analyse and identify the contributors and resources involved in an action research task.
2. Construct a Research Proposal suitable for their project which addresses relevant ethical issues.
3. Formulate a hypothesis for their research project.
4. Collect record and interpret data.
5. Analyse information to support decision making.
6. Advise and share information with other practitioners and professionals
7. Demonstrate integration of outcomes into own and/or current workplace practice.

Skills:
Intellectual - (taught and assessed) Processing and analysing information appropriately, using appropriate secondary sources.
Professional - (facilitated, taught and assessed) Decision making, sharing information, observing ethics.
Practical - (facilitated and assessed) Time management, constructing the portfolio, improving or changing current practice.
Key Skills - (Facilitated and assessed) This unit will support students in demonstrating a range of skills and competencies both professional and practical in the workplace.

Content:
This unit concentrates on the following areas:
* How to carry out a proposal for research;
* Project management skills through the implementation of the project and project presentation;
* How to construct a research project from initial ideas, through proposals, formulating hypothesis to final implementation, evaluation and recommendations;
* Consideration of ethical issues;
* Sampling, data collection and interpretation;
* Presenting findings in a logical and coherent way.
