| Description:
| Aims: This unit aims to: * Provide a framework for the specific application of electrotherapy relating to injury. * Develop an in depth knowledge of the maintenance and application of electrical modalities. * Illustrate the effect of electrical modalities on tissue. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit students will be able to: * Prepare for and provide a full electrotherapy treatment specific to injury, patient requirements, professional standards and any contraindications the patient may have. * Analyse the use of electrotherapy and its physiological and psychological effects on injury and performance. * Demonstrate the application of electrotherapy techniques in a number of situations and environments in a safe and effective manner. * Assess the effectiveness and application of differing electrical modalities * Evaluate the outcomes of each treatment and impart into a rational and effective rehabilitation programme. Skills: Intellectual: (T, F and A) Knowledge of current theoretical concepts in the field of electrotherapy; analysis of the effectiveness of electrical modalities and justification of electrical treatments. Professional: (F) Independent research; report writing; consultation and assessment skills. Practical: (T, F and A) Safe and effective application of electrical modalities and assessment of patients. Key: (F and A) Professional development and communication skills; improving performance; working with others and practical problem solving. (T: Taught, F: Facilitated, A: Assessed) Content: * Professional appearance, attitude and confidential approach, liaison with medical practitioners. * Planning treatments: type of treatment, duration and frequency of modality, target area of electrotherapy, planning for individual and group treatment, planning for different venues. * Selection of modality: benefits, effects and reasons for choosing certain modalities. * Venues: treatment room, track side, football pitch, rugby pitch, health club, leisure centre, pool side, ring side. * Modalities: Ultrasound, Infra-red, TENS, Interferential including the scientific theory behind their application, physical, physiological and psychological effects. * Adapting application for pre-event, inter- event and post-event. * Rate and depth of treatment, techniques selected and the duration of treatment. * Benefits of treatment: effects on nervous and muscular tissue, psychological benefits, results of treatment on injuries. * Aftercare: relaxation, re-mobilisation, exercise and training plans, subsequent treatments, after massage advice. |
