The aims of this unit are to ensure that students:
* Are able to demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding of youth and community work.
* Can relate the historical context of youth work in the community and understand the social and political context affecting work with young people.
* Are able to carryout comparative studies of youth work in different communities in the UK.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit students should be able to:
* Describe and evaluate the skills necessary to enable them to work within different communities.
* Identify, explain and evaluate the origins and growth of youth and community development.
* Select, compare and evaluate the difference in approaches within the national context of youth work in the community.
* Define and assess critically the theory, practice and policy development and examine against relevant literature.

Skills:
At the end of the unit students will have gained the following skills:
* Be able to use the appropriate tools to relate theory to practice e.g. secondary research.
* Be able to use technology to enable appropriate comparisons to be made.
* Be able to use of a range of communication skills.

Content:
The syllabus for this unit concentrates on extending the skills gained in previous level of study and including:
* Concepts of youth and community working.
* Knowing their own community
* The history of youth and community work
* Methods of carrying out a comparative study
* Use of Information Technology
* Case studies
* Class exercises.
