The aims of this unit are to ensure that students:
* Understand the way that professional services for young people are arranged in the European Community with special reference to youth work.
* Show the usefulness of exchange contacts and know how to access support and grants from within the South West.
* Know the range of pedagogic approaches within the UK for Youth Work and how they are linked to current youth work curricula.
* Be able to compare UK social pedagogic approaches with those used in Europe.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit students should be able to:
* Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the organisation to services for young people in Europe and be able to compare these critically and analytically with UK approaches.
* Illustrate an ability to create an application for an exchange trip and know how to access funding and support.
* Recognize the range of social pedagogic approaches used in the United Kingdom and show how these compare with the various youth and curricula initiatives operated in the United Kingdom.
* Demonstrate an ability to compare United Kingdom pedagogic approaches with those used in Europe and to produce a critical discussion on efficacy.

Skills:
At the end of the unit students will have gained the following skills:
* Intellectual (taught) - social pedagogic skills, criticism and analysis.
* Professional (facilitated, taught and assessed) - exchange techniques, fund-raising and support.
* Practical (facilitated) - bid writing.
* Key Skills (facilitated - assessed through other units) - the skills in this unit will assist students in the demonstration of competence in the common core modules and work undertaken in this module will be expected to contribute to their portfolios in those units.
