The aims of this unit are to analyse the uses and applications in motorsport of vehicle simulation packages. This will include a study of the different types of simulation employed by motorsport teams, and the potential for the interaction between data gained from a simulation package with data gained empirically via data logging systems. The unit includes practical experience of using an industry-standard motorsport simulation program.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit students should be able to:
* Describe how logged data is capable of developing a record of vehicle performance on a variety of events
* Evaluate and compare a variety of sensors used to collect data for comparison with simulator data
* Describe and evaluate the factors driving the adoption and development of simulation techniques
* Justify and compare a representative range of simulator types currently used in motorsport, comparing their applications and the benefits gained from their use
* Propose and critique how the use of simulation techniques might develop in the future and evaluate what potential benefits might accrue from this development
* Evaluate the practical use of a simulation package to study the effect on simulated vehicle performance of specified engine or chassis alterations.

Skills:
During the unit students should gain the following skills:
Intellectual:
* Gathering, processing and analysing data (T,A)
* Formulating outcomes (A)
Professional:
* Making decisions based on recorded data (A)
* Making written presentation (A)
Practical:
* Experience using a simulator package and data logging products and sensors (T)
Key:
* Applying numerical techniques (A)
* Interpreting data (A)
* Using graphs and tables to present experimental results (A)

Content:
This unit includes:
* Circuit and chassis simulator packages
* Data logging systems.
