| Description:
| Aims: To acquaint students with a range of literature dealing with molecular and cellular biology. Learning Outcomes: After taking this course the student should be able to: * explain the social determinants of biological research; * explain how biological ideas can impact on society; * explain how biological technologies can impact on society. Skills: Learning and studying T/F/A, Written communication T/F/A, Working independently T/F, Career preparation T/F. Content: Students will be expected to read 5 books on molecular and cellular biology. These will be chosen to cover a range of areas and to illuminate not just the scientific results but also the social context of discovery and the impact upon society that the discovery may produce. They may deal with research, with interpretation of biological facts or with biological technologies. Students should read the books carefully and critically, so that they can discuss the content from an ethical, sociological, historical and scientific point of view. |
