To develop basic concepts of liquids and solutions including: a thermodynamic description of colligative properties, non-ideal behaviour, dielectric properties, electrolytes, fundamentals of solvation as well as some examples of liquids and solutions in context including liquid crystals, solutions of polymers and dynamic electrochemistry.

Learning Outcomes:

* Describe a liquid and a mixture of liquids in terms of its thermodynamic properties;
* Explain the effect of a solute on the freezing and boiling point of a liquid;
* Describe the dielectric properties of water and some non-aqueous polar solvents;
* Describe the hydration and solvation of ions;
* Describe the molecular structure found in common liquid crystals;
* Application of examples from electrochemistry as well as pure liquids and liquid mixtures to solve chemical problems.

Skills:
Problem-solving (T,A), Numeracy (F,A), Independent working (F).

Content:

* Thermodynamic properties of pure liquids and liquid mixtures (non-electrolytes)
* Partial molar quantities
* The vapour pressure of liquid mixtures
* Colligative properties - the effect of solute on the boiling and freezing points
* Non-ideal mixtures
* Dielectric properties - and examples water and non-aqueous polar solvents
* Activities, regular solutions
* Aqueous solutions of electrolytes - hydration, solvation of ions, Debye-Huckel theory, ionic transport and the ionic atmosphere
* Liquid crystals - order and molecular structure
* Solutions of polymers
* Dynamic electrochemistry - voltammetry, electrode kinetics.
