This unit will consider the role of education insociety. It will be based on an assessment of the purposes of education and of educational organisations such as schools, colleges and universities. It will consider government policies towards education; how these policies were formed and what they mean in practice. Examples will be drawn from the UK and wider.

Learning Outcomes:
Students will appreciate the contested nature of the functions and values of education and be able to undertake wider questioning of the effects of education on individuals and social groups.

Aims and purposes of formal education in the Uk the politics of education; the role of the state in education policy and practice; national curricula, national development plans, centralised and decentralised systems; equal opportunity in education; the sociology of assessment; ethnicity and education; gender and education; disability rights and education; markets and equity; cultural capital and access to education.
