| Aims: The aim of this unit is to introduce aspects of systems modelling that relate to clinical system development and evaluation. Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding After taking this unit the student should be able to: * Explain the principles of data storage and interpretation More specifically they should be able to: * Critically evaluate various nomenclatures of health information systems * Demonstrate skills in the use of Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) modelling techniques * Demonstrate an understanding of information systems in their own area, clinical and administrative * Apply Unified Modelling Language (UML) modelling techniques and describe the use of publically available healthcare models specified using UML * Describe the use of Extensible Markup Language (XML) * Compare and contrast different philosophical approaches to Systems development These learning outcomes will be taught and assessed. Skills: On completion of this unit students should be able to: * Provide advice on data storage and interpretation (Taught, facilitated and assessed) * Apply modelling techniques to system development (Taught, facilitated and assessed) * Plan and manage their learning through reflecting on and analysing their own learning needs (Taught and facilitated ) * Integrate and critically evaluate information gathered from a wide range of resources including the unit resources, text books, journal articles, web pages and other online resources. An appreciation for a hierarchy of evidence should be displayed (Taught, facilitated and assessed) * Communicate effectively with colleagues and tutors including through asynchronous online discussions (Facilitated). Content: Healthcare environments brings their own unique challenges to the systems designer. This unit explores how systems in healthcare may be modelled and built to enhance the healthcare process. This unit covers the following topics: * System development and analysis using modelling techniques Specifically will include: * Introduction to Modelling * Entity Relationship Diagramming * Introduction to UML Modelling * XML * Dynamic Modelling * User Interface Aspects and the Computer Screen * Systems Theory |
