Click here for further information Description: Aims:
The aim of this unit is to develop the students' knowledge and understanding of the social, economic and political aspects of work, organisation and employment relations, especially in light of major societal trends, such as globalisation, technological change, shifts in labour markets, professions, and social identities. The unit seeks to explore theoretical debates and their relevance to policy.

Learning Outcomes:
Through a variety of teaching methods the learning objectives are to achieve:
* An understanding of the context within which work, organisation, and employment relations undergo changes (e.g. in the UK, EU, US and internationally);
* An understanding of the social, economic and political forces shaping work, organisation and employment relations;
* An appreciation of the power of theories in providing more comprehensive ideas of modern economic life;
* An understanding of the collective and individual processes and outcomes in organisations.

Analysis of practical cases (taught and facilitated)
Data searching (taught and facilitated).

Content:
Work, organisation and employment relations in social, economic and historical context; theoretical approaches and frames of reference in the understanding of work, organisation and employment relation; political processes around employment relations; management authority, trade unions and the institutional settings, including collective bargaining, industrial conflict, and government regulation; globalization and changes in work, organisation and employment relations; the influence of societal changes (technology, labour markets, professional and industry restructuring, and social identities) on the structure of work and organisation; the effects of these on individual and collective employment relations.
