| Description:
| Aims: This unit is designed to enable students to acquire additional knowledge and skills relating to the management of mass fatality incidents, disasters and pandemics. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students will: * Understand and reflect on the key principles of managing mass fatality incidents. * Understand and reflect on the key principles of managing a pandemic. * Knowledge of government legislation and other policy documents related to the management of mass fatalities. * Understanding of UK and international agencies involved in the management of mass fatalities. * Evaluate the impact of mass fatalities on bereaved people. Skills: Skills in: * The use of cognitive skills including evaluation, analysis and synthesis; * An ability to retrieve and utilise the key guidance documents and standard protocols in this area; * An ability to apply skills learned in other parts of the course to more unusual contexts such as a pandemic; * An ability to apply theory to work based practice; * The ability to use Moodle as a learning and communication tool; * Define social attitudes to bereavement in these contexts and recognise their relevance to practice; * Reflect on how working with issues around mortality impacts on our sense of self identity and the way we view others. Content: The specifics of the course content would need to include some flexibility to allow for current incidents and changing legislation e.g. Coronial reform. The Unit focuses on four essential areas: * Management of Mass Fatality Incidents (both UK and International) and the agencies and stakeholders involved; * Management of Pandemics and similarities and differences with other aspects of disaster management ( both UK and International); * Perspectives of survivors and the bereaved; * Key legislation and regulations applicable to disasters. The programme of teaching in this unit will use a variety of methods including case studies utilising both UK and International examples. |
