To provide students with an opportunity to develop data analysis and mathematical skills through statistics workshops, directed tutorial assignments and computer sessions.
To further develop writing and information gathering and interpreting skills.
To introduce the safe handling and uses of radiochemicals in the biosciences.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this course the student should be able to:
* decide on an appropriate statistical test for the analysis of scientific data
* execute basic statistical tests using computer software and interpret the outcome of such tests
* undertake mole, gram and volume calculations that are needed for basic laboratory work
* Write in a scientific style appropriate for the information to be presented
* Gather information from published sources to prepare an essay on a specific topic
* Describe the methods for safe handling of radiochemicals and their uses in the Biosciences.

Content:
Practical skills: Basic quantitative laboratory skills; radiochemical handling.
IT skills: Computer statistical package.
General skills: Numerical skills, statistical skills.
These skills will be developed during tutorial sessions, which have the additional aim of strengthening information gathering and writing skills.
