This unit aims to:
* Enhance students' understanding of the relationship between sound and picture in multimedia and moving image productions.
* Build on practical skills learnt in Production Techniques 1 & 2 with advanced techniques and detailed understanding of recording, sound editing processes and basic mastering.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit the student should be able to:
* analyse the relationship between sound and picture in multimedia and moving image productions;
* devise soundtracks (music and effects) for multimedia and moving image productions;
* record sound for soundtracks and create temp music tracks.

Skills:
Analytical: analysis of the use of sound in multimedia and moving image productions, analysis of acoustic environment for recordings, creative decision-making (T, A)
Practical: sound recording, editing and mixing/basic mastering (F, A)

Content:
Analysis of the use of sound in productions. Experimentation of sound recording techniques. Application of techniques to practical exercises and short films or multimedia productions.
* explain requirements of music score for moving image and multimedia productions
* compile a temp track (using pre-existing material or sample libraries) to illustrate their decisions
* understand the broad characteristics of acoustic environments in relation to recording and effects processing
* distinguish between different microphone types (technology and cardioid patterns) and determine the best equipment for particular recordings
* capture sound and music in suitable formats by suitable methods in a range of situations
* edit, arrange and mix own recorded and pre-recorded sounds from different sources.
