Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
This unit aims to:
* Build on the technical knowledge from Creative Technologies 1 & 2 combined with the film production units to provide students with a working knowledge of a wide range of digital film and broadcast technologies.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit the student should be able to:
* identify and explain a broad range of current and historical digital film and broadcast technologies;
* demonstrate competence in employing digital film and broadcast technologies;
* design and implement post-production facilities;
* describe key features of broadcast technologies and the broadcast chain.

Skills:
Analytical: development of technologies through history, specification of systems fit for purpose (T, A)
Practical: implementation of systems fit for purpose (F, A)

Content:
Report on current and historical digital film and broadcast technologies (including component, composite, PAL, NTSC, SECAM, HDMI, DVI, SDI, (3G)HD-SDI, AES-EBU, DVB-T(2), DVB-S, cable, Tx Multiplexing, IPTV, 3D, Cloud, emerging technologies) and the broadcast chain from studio to domestic receiver/display.
Employing digital film and broadcast technologies including acquisition of video footage at broadcast standard (4:3, 14:9 safe, 16:9), high definition (720p, 1080i), digital film (1080p, 2k, 4k) and special formats (web, high fps).
Mastering to a variety of formats as above using a number of codecs suitable for a variety of distribution methods (DV, HDV, DVD, BluRay, Flash, etc.).
Design and implementation of post-production facilities (including hardware connections, external storage, RAID, backup procedures, software setup for Mac & PC, video & audio monitors) for a variety of purposes.
