This unit will guide students in developing knowledge related to an introductory scientific and theoretical understanding of sports coaching. Students will gain an appreciation of critical factors which relate to sport coaching including pedagogical, psychological and sociological perspectives. Such a heightened appreciation of various knowledge�s and ideas that underpin coaching practice can provide a meaningful catalyst to address coaching as an academic field of inquiry.

Learning Outcomes:

* To engage students with sports coaching theory and knowledge to examine the role of the coach;
* To promote a dynamic interchange between theory, research and practice in sports coaching;
* Demonstrate a critical understanding of sports coaching considering how coaching practice can impact on performance.

Skills:
Critically evaluate sports coaching and sports science literature including paradigms, theories, concepts and principles from a range of sources to construct coherent arguments. Communicate a piece of intellectual work using appropriate resources applying knowledge derived from contemporary sources which can be applied to practical coaching environments.

Content:
This unit will primarily develop an understanding of `what is� coaching addressing ambiguities involved and framing within the process of coaching. Through understanding such complexities in the `role� the unit will consider in more detail context related behaviours that account for coaching practice as a social practice considering the interconnectedness of coaching. Students will appreciate both linear and non-linear approaches to structuring coaching practice examining coaching from a number of related perspectives in order to conceptually blend key ideas that can both maximise performance and underpin coaching.
