* Understand the legislative requirements of the Code of Practice of Special Educational Needs and other legislative frameworks;
* To understand specific and differentiated needs of children with special educational needs and disabilities;
* Develop and promote effective strategies for working with children with special educational needs;
* Recognise when to refer to other professionals for advice on children's learning or development;
* Understand the importance and value of observations and record keeping in the workplace;
* Recognise the importance of promoting health and well-being in children;
* Recognising barriers to children’s health and well-being and the effects of these barriers.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* Recognise and evaluate legislative frameworks for supporting children with SEN.
* Identify and discuss different special needs and reflect on educational and supportive approaches.
* Identify and evaluate strategies for promoting health and well-being in children.
* Identify and evaluate barriers to children's health and well-being.

* Research and evaluate appropriate literature to support writing [t]

* Assess children’s needs through appropriate observations, record and store according to data protection legislation
* Working with parents and other professionals

* Enabling children to be included within the setting .

Content:

* The current legislation and guidance and philosophies that supports children with special education needs and disabilities.
* To understand a range of special needs and disabilities and the impact this can have on learning and development.
* To recognise the impact having a child with special needs has on families.
* Discuss and evaluate a range of strategies to support children and their families with special needs and disabilities and how they can promote learning.
* The role of a multi professional, inter disciplinary approach to special needs and disability.
* Analyse the concept of inclusion
* The value and importance of observations/recording of information for children with special needs and disabilities.
* How health and well being in all children can be or is being promoted, both at a local level and a national level.
* Evaluation of the barriers to health and well-being in children and the effects this may have on learning and development and future life experiences.
* Social and medical approaches to health.
