| Description:
| Aims: During this unit, students will explore the concept of childhood, how it has changed, how it varies in different cultures, and the factors influencing early years social policy. Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit the learners will be able to: * Analyse the construction of childhood and the changing status of children in the local community; * Contrast the concept of childhood in this society and others in order to inform their own professional understanding; * Analyse factors informing and influencing current early years social policy. Skills: Intellectual skills: * Critically analyse policy * Synthesise information objectively from a variety of sources Professional skills: * Learners must demonstrate how they would: * Interpret policies and procedures to apply to practice * Understand the social context in the best interest of the child. Key skills: * Critically reflect upon learners' own and others attitudes and values * Write concisely about complex issues. Content: Key social factors and sociological perspectives that influence children and families will be identified. The changing concept of childhood within society, the impact of globalisation and changing roles of children and families will be explored. The child's experience as a citizen within the UK will be analysed, taking into account cultural experiences and expectations. The diversity of different childhoods in 21st century Britain will be considered and compared with the the experience of childhood within the student’s local community. Students will look at diversity within their local community and consider the implications of meeting the needs of all children and families. Factors driving policies and practices in the UK will be identified. The impact of policies and legislative frameworks on Early Years policies and practices will be explored. The concept of children's rights will be analysed, including its interpretation into UK law. |
