Follow this link for further information on unit content Description: Aims:
This unit is designed to further develop the core engineering elements and industrial applications of integrated engineering from those taught in EE10170 (Introduction to Integrated Engineering). The unit is intended to provide a deeper understanding of the detail of sensors and actuators and their capabilities. Students are also introduced to the use of different industrial electronic and instrumentation systems. The computing element of these systems is considered in detail.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit students will have demonstrated the ability to:
* analyze and design an integrated system and be familiar with the specification of sensors, instrumentation and actuators in the solution. T
* create suitable control mechanisms in hardware or software to allow the system to operate to specification.

Skills:
Lateral thinking; problem solving; independent and team working.

Content:
The unit will include mechanical and electrical and electromechanical sensors and actuators and sensors. Particular emphasis is in smart sensors and smart actuators.
Examples are Piezoelectric, Magnetostrictive, Shape memory alloy, Conducting polymer, Other smart actuators and sensors.
Industrial electronics/computing/instrumentation:
Interfaces between computing systems and sensors/actuators
Software control systems using the C programming language
Real-time aspects of software control.
