This unit will give students a thorough understanding of the lifestyle and exercise issues that affect special populations (children and older adults), allowing them to accurately prescribe suitable exercise regimes.
[N.B. This unit may allow for a Central YMCA Qualification in 'exercise for the older adult' or 'health-related exercise for children'.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate the issues influencing current lifestyle trends and nutritional behaviours in children and older adults, (including an analysis of the resulting health implications, e.g. disease development).
2. Explain and analyse the role of health-related exercise for children and older adults.
3. Critically reflect on the relationship between specific diet and different exercising groups (i.e. children and older adults).
4. Devise and construct a six week progressive programme of exercise for children or older adults.

Skills:
Intellectual: (T, F & A) Knowledge of relevant theoretical concepts. Critical evaluation and analysis of current issues and health-related concepts for children and older adults; including the ability to compare, contrast and analyse health implications.
Professional: (F) Independent research, presentation skills, report writing, case-study analysis. Devising safe and effective progressive exercise programmes in the workplace.
Practical: (T, F & A) Application of theories and current issues through observation, research and critical reflection to conduct a safe and effective case study. Analysis to devise a progressive exercise programme.

* Modern lifestyle trends and current dietary statistics for children and older adults in Western society
* Effects of lifestyle on eating habits and consequences for health
* Role of society and cultures in lifestyle choice / dietary habits and the consequences for disease development
* Benefits and limitations of exercise with children: current physical activity figures; adaptations to exercise / activity; importance and state of primary school sport; tackling inactivity / obesity
* Benefits and limitations of exercise with older adults: current trends; the ageing process and its effects on exercise prescription; effects on combating onset of clinical conditions
* Nutritional demands of exercise related to children and older adults
* Exercise programmes adapted for children: motivation to participate; avoiding growth related injuries; FITT for life
* Exercise programmes adapted for older adults: motivation to participate; low impact versus high impact - avoidance of injury; FITT to combat onset of clinical conditions
