Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aims of this unit are to:
* investigate engineering systems.
* analyse static forces and force systems.
* analyse linear and angular dynamic engineering systems.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students should be able to:
* describe the main features of an engineering system.
* apply the principles of static and dynamic force on given materials.
* determine the resultant force for coplanar systems involving 3 or more forces.
* establish the relationship between displacement, velocity and acceleration for linear and angular motion.

Skills:
During this unit students should gain the following skills:
Intellectual
* gathering, processing and analysing technical information (A)
* formulating outcomes (A)
Professional
* making written presentations (A)
Practical
* developing identification and observational skills to maintain records and contribute to reports (T,A)
* carrying out practical investigations of engineering systems (F,A)
Key
* writing reports (A)
* applying numerical techniques (T,A)
* using graphs and tables to present experimental results (F,A).

Content:
This unit focuses on:
* identification of systems and system boundaries, sub-systems, inputs and outputs, the direction of signal flow, signal modification, conversion and feedback
* measurement of load, strain, force, temperature, pressure and flow
* determination of static and dynamic forces including static and dynamic friction on a variety of materials, compression, tensions, shear; representation of forces as vectors, vector diagrams and resultant/equilibriant
* definitions for displacement, velocity and acceleration; the equations of motion for constant linear and angular acceleration
* using Newton's laws of motion in determining linear and angular momentum.
