The aims of this unit are:
* To develop students' ability to undertake professional evaluation and reflection both theoretically and practically, and show how they could use their own reflection to support others in funeral directing.
* To provide students with the opportunity to critically evaluate the contemporary practice of funeral directing and show evidence of an ability to think innovatively in developing good practice.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students will be able to:
* Demonstrate their skills, knowledge and comprehensive understanding of what constitutes good practice in funeral directing
* Develop good practice in funeral directing through their own innovative and creative practice
* Demonstrate their knowledge and experience of dealing with ethical and financial issues in funeral directing
* Critically evaluate and reflect on their own practice and show how this impacts on their work and on others
* Show an understanding of diverse funerals, for example multiple funerals, burial at sea

Skills:
At the end of the unit students will have gained the following skills:
* Intellectual (taught) - Techniques for reflection on and evaluation of funeral directing
* Professional (facilitated, taught and assessed) - funeral directing techniques and tools, working habits, good practice in funeral directing
* Practical (facilitated) - arranging a funeral, dealing with paperwork, liability, recording techniques, diversity in funerals
* Key Skills (facilitated - through assessment for the unit) - the skills in this unit will assist students in the demonstration of reflection when it comes to developing good practice within their workplace. This will contribute to their assessment for this unit.

Content:
The syllabus for this unit concentrates on extending the skills gained in Developing Professional Competence 1 and 2 and includes:
* Critical reflection of own and others practice
* Reflection on arranging funerals, diverse requests from clients, financial considerations and dealing with complex paperwork
* Techniques and tools for developing good practice and dealing with ethical issues
* Appropriate legal, financial and practical requirements in funeral directing
* The application of legal, financial and practical requirements to everyday practice.
