The aims of this module are to enable students to understand the crucial role of the process of observation for competent social work practice and to critically reflect on their own values, their understanding of self and the relevance of these for their future role as professional social workers.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the module students will be able to:
* Reflect on their own background, experiences and practice that may have an impact on the social work/user relationship (Key Role 1 Unit 1 Element 1.3)
* Seek supervision and support in areas that might cause conflict or hinder the social work/user relationship (Key Role 1 Unit 1 Element 1.3)
* Evaluate their own values and principles and identify any conflicts and tensions that might arise, either generally or when dealing with specific cases (Key Role 6 Unit 19 Element 19.3)
* Develop strategies to deal with any conflicts or tensions (Key Role 6 Unit 19 Element 19.3)
* Seek help and advice on values and principles that they are unable to integrate into practice, either generally or when dealing with specific cases (Key Role 6 Unit 19 Element 19.3)
* Critically apply psychological & sociological explanations of human growth & development & the factors that impact upon it (Knowledge indicator 2)
* Recognise their own values, prejudices, ethical dilemmas & conflicts of interest & their implications on their practice (Knowledge Indicator 3)
* Value, recognise & respect the diversity, expertise & experience of individuals, families, carers, groups & communities (Knowledge Indicator 3).

Skills:
Critical application of psychological & physiological theoretical perspectives to understanding individual & social development & functioning; ethical practice; assessment; working with difference & similarity; observation, interpretation & assessment; project management; critical reflection; self-evaluation skills; peer supervision & teamwork skills; communication skills.

Content:
Psychological, sociological and biological models of human growth and development and their relevance to social work practice; observation as a generic social work skill underpinning good practice. Students will organise and undertake a period of observation, this will be supported by a series of student led seminars that explore the process of observation and enable students to reflect on their own role and impact within the process.
