This unit enables students to gain the management skills necessary to function effectively within the funeral industry, including an overview of the many tasks that are expected of a manager. It also aims to develop an understanding of the obligations to adhere to ethical and behavioural standards of conduct in their work.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit the learner will be able to:
* Describe and apply management theory to business practice
* To discuss the importance of time management as contributing to the continuous improvement of professional competence.
* To identify and set objectives for training and development in line with business needs.
* Identify the theory and principles of management techniques in particular those of communication, delegation, information handling, planning, monitoring, evaluation and time management.
* Understand the ethical issues related to business management within the funeral services industry.

Skills:
The professional practice for this unit is that the learner must demonstrate whilst working as a practitioner within the funeral services industry that they can:
* Identify mechanisms/strategies to develop self and improve business performance
* Manage time and resources to meet business objectives
* Identify and understand the importance of a range of ethical practices relevant to both business management generally, and to the funeral services industry in particular.
* Recognise how working with issues around mortality impacts on our sense of self identity and how we view others.
* Gather an synthesise information from a number of sources in order to gain a coherent understanding.
