| Description:
| Aims: * To introduce students to how attitudes to death and childhood vary across societies and over time; * To enable students to understand the impact of the death of children on funeral practice and bereavement; * To enable students to understand the impact of death and bereavement on children and its significance for funeral practice. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit students will have demonstrated: * To understand the social concepts of the 'timeliness' of death; * To understand the importance of family context; * To understand the impact on bereavement of both sudden and expected death; * To relate bereavement theory to funeral practice; * To understand the ethical issues involved in reflective practice. Skills: * Identify and access information from a range of sources; * Relate distinct theoretical approaches to practice; * Think creatively and analytically; * Good writing and presentation skills; * To reflect on how working with issues around mortality impacts on our sense of self and the way we view others; * To relate Christianity and other religions and forms of spirituality to practice. Content: * Historical and social understandings of the nature of childhood; * Bereavement theories related to children; * Social reactions to death of children; * Death 'out of time'; * Expected death; * Sudden death; * Child development in relation to understandings of death; * The child in the context of the family. |
