* To introduce students to appreciate the diversity and complexity of grief responses and the significance for practice;
* To understand the way in which grief is socially and culturally shaped;
* To understand the implications of bereavement for individuals and society.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students will be able to:
* Identify and assess psychological models of grief;
* Identify and assess recent grief models such as that of 'continuing bonds';
* Identify and assess psychological and sociological approaches to grief;
* Recognise the importance for business practice of understanding diverse bereavement responses.

Skills:

* Identify and access information from a range of sources;
* Identify and apply distinct theoretical approaches to practice;
* Relate Christianity and other forms of spirituality to practice;
* Think creatively and analytically;
* Good writing and presentation skills;
* Reflect on how working with issues around mortality impacts upon our sense of self identity and the way we view others.

* Psychological and medical models of grief;
* The medicalisation and professionalisation of bereavement;
* Sociological approaches to grief and bereavement;
* Social and cultural diversity in grief responses;
* The place of the dead in the lives of the living;
* Grief and the media;
* The role of professional and voluntary organisations in supporting bereaved people.
